Taught by a sixth-form teacher who has tutored Maths for over a decade
The jump from GCSE to A-Level Maths is the steepest in the curriculum. Students who cruised to a grade 8 or 9 hit Year 12 and find that fluency they never had to build is suddenly assumed.
Almost always, the problem isn’t the new content. It’s algebraic fluency, the ability to manipulate expressions quickly and accurately without thinking about it. When that’s shaky, every new topic costs three times the effort, because half the working is a fight.
I’ve tutored A-Level Maths one-to-one for over a decade, alongside teaching A-Level Chemistry full-time in a London sixth-form. The first thing I do is find out whether we’re dealing with a content problem or a fluency problem, because the fix is completely different.
The Chemistry background is more relevant than it looks: if your child takes both, the applied maths that underpins Chemistry, rearrangement, logs, rates, proportional reasoning, gets taught once, properly, and works in both subjects.
