I teach A-Level Chemistry full-time at one of London’s top-performing sixth-form colleges, and I have taught and tutored for over a decade. I hold an MSc (Hons) in Chemistry from Imperial College London and trained as a teacher at UCL’s Institute of Education. Alongside teaching, I am an A-Level examiner.
Most students in the cohort I teach go on to medicine, dentistry, engineering or Oxbridge, where an A is the expectation rather than the hope. That does not mean you need to be near the top to work with me. The tools are the same; only the starting point changes.
Teaching the same specification each year gives me a detailed knowledge of the course content, and of the mistakes and misconceptions students make most often. I also mark hundreds of papers a year against the official mark schemes, which means I understand precisely what is needed to maximise marks.
That expertise in examination technique helps students grasp what an examiner is looking for and close the gap between grades. It covers command words and how to answer them, how to present working, and how to use the time available in an exam properly.

01 · Approach
What I believe about learning
There is no such thing as “not a Chemistry person”. In ten years I have never met a student who could not improve substantially. I have met plenty who had been told, or had decided, that they could not, which is a different problem and a solvable one.
Understanding is one skill; using it in an exam is another. Every student is capable of understanding the content. Where most struggle is in applying it under examination conditions, and that is a skill in its own right, taught separately and directly.
Every student is different. The first job is working out what a particular student actually needs: the content itself, the technique for answering questions on it, or the step between a grade 7 and a grade 8. Starting anywhere else wastes the hour.
Learning has to be engaging. Students who find a subject interesting put more into understanding it, revise more readily, and are more willing to keep going when it gets difficult. That is not a distraction from grades; it is the shortest route to them.
02 · Safeguarding
How I keep students safe
- I hold an Enhanced DBS check for the child workforce, and I subscribe to the DBS Update Service, so it is kept current and can be verified online rather than taken on trust.
- A parent or guardian is welcome to be present, or within earshot, at any session, in person or online.
- Online sessions are conducted on a standard video platform.
- For students under 18, scheduling and progress communication goes to the parent or guardian, not directly to the student, unless the parent has explicitly agreed otherwise.
- I am unable to offer private tuition to students at the college where I teach.
