Separate Science and Combined Science, Foundation and Higher
GCSE Chemistry is where students decide whether they’re “a science person.” Get it right and A-Level becomes an option; get it wrong and the door quietly closes at 16.
The subject is unusually front-loaded with abstract ideas, atoms, moles, bonding, that students are asked to accept before they can see why they matter. Students who don’t get a firm grip on these early topics spend the rest of the course building on sand.
I teach A-Level Chemistry full-time, which gives me a clear view of exactly what GCSE students need to have secure before they go further, and which shortcuts cause problems two years later. But equally, most GCSE students aren’t going on to A-Level. They need the grade, taught well and without unnecessary complication.

Both Foundation and Higher tier. If you’re unsure which tier is right, that’s a conversation worth having early. Entering at the wrong tier costs grades. Those are my main specialisms, but I work regularly with Cambridge International as well. Whichever board your school enters you for, sessions are targeted at that specification.
